The former FLOTUS knows the ‘Blackish’ star is a class act
This grad gets Michelle Obama’s vote.
“Blackish” actress Yara Shahidi has one less thing to worry about while putting her college applications together. The 17-year-old star told W Magazine that the former First Lady wrote her the ultimate recommendation letter.
“She is very amazing and such a supporter, which is something very surreal to say,” said Shahidi, who is applying to schools including Obama’s alma mater, Harvard, where she plans to double major in African American studies and sociology.
Oh, and the FLOTUS also gave a Shahidi a “go get ‘em, tiger” back rub before the 17-year-old took her AP exams.
The young activist built her BFF relationship with one of the most powerful women in the world by sharing the stage at speaking engagements, which also scored an invite to the final Obamas-hosted White House Easter egg roll, where she met Beyonce.
So what caught Obama’s eye? Those extracurriculars, kids. Besides filming her hit ABC show almost 50 hours a week, Shahidi also founded the Yara’s Club mentoring program under the Young Women’s Leadership Network, volunteers at medical clinics and was honored at the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards in February for her activism and service.
