Millions of viewers have been waiting for the mammal to become a mama
For many, watching this giraffe give birth has been a pain in the neck.
April, a 15-year-old African giraffe being hosted by the Animal Adventure Park near Binghamton, NY is slated to give birth any day now. The culmination of her 15-month-long pregnancy is likely to be a relief to the millions of viewers who have been watching her in her playpen, though TMZ reports that the Park is looking for someone to pony up $50,000 after a previous sponsorship deal lapsed. The park has already raised more than $60,000 in donations over the past 20 days from a GoFundMe campaign.
The giraffe has been expected to give birth to a six-feet-tall calf—her fourth—since early March and the weaning process could take almost a year. A rep for the Adventure Park confirmed that the organization, which seeks to promote close-up interaction with animals, was looking for a sponsor but wasn’t immediately able to offer more details. As of 10:30 am this morning, over 100,000 people were watching a live feed of April on YouTube.
The park has milked the much-hyped event for all it’s worth. A Facebook post comparing April’s pregnancy to Beyoncé’s jokingly claimed that the world was more interested in the giraffe’s calf than the singer’s twins. That said, she is not the first animal to have a massive social media following: A live cam on a bird called Decorah Eagles has received more than 345 million views.
