McDonald’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Shake has returned
The calorie counts on these dishes are hard to swallow.
Snack makers and fast food chains are dishing out some of the most gut-busting calorie bombs lately, from fried appetizers packing a day’s worth of calories to kelly green milkshakes and cookies that give you the unicorn-colored trots.
Here’s some bites you might want to indulge in – or that might send you running back to the salad bar.
Outback’s 3-Point Bloomin Onion
As if the original flower-shaped 1,954-calorie deep-fried onion wasn’t heavy enough, the steakhouse has now piled on Aussie cheese fries (with Monterey Jack, cheddar and bacon) and topped it with sirloin steak bits for a whopping 3,080-calorie dish, available through April 4. But if you split it among six friends, as the restaurant suggests, it comes out to a more palatable 513 calories apiece.
McDonald’s Shamrock Shake
Erin go blech. McDonald’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Shake will make calorie counters green around the gills. The dyed vanilla milkshake topped with green sprinkles, whipped “topping” and a cherry packs between 470 and 820 calories, and 14 to 22 grams of fat, depending if you go small or large. And the expanding McCafe has also added a Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappe (up to 900 calories), a Chocolate Shamrock Shake (up to 830 calories), a Shamrock Mocha (up to 490 calories) and a Shamrock Hot Chocolate (up to 530 calories) to its March menu.
7-Eleven’s Breakfast Pizza
This is a hot mess no matter how you slice it. The convenience store chain recently introduced this breakfast monstrosity which tops a biscuit crust with smoked bacon, sausage, hickory-smoked ham, scrambled eggs, cheddar and mozzarella cheese. It’s then slathered with peppered cream gravy and comes in at 360 calories. But, if we’re being honest, who doesn’t love leftover pizza for breakfast – so why not crack in a few eggs?
Taco Bell’s Naked Chicken Chalupa
Pour a Pepto-Bismol out for the Naked Chicken Chalupa, a 440-calorie concoction that features fried chicken into a taco shell, filled it with lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and creamy avocado ranch dressing. Taco Bell is pulling these limited-time treats this month – although late-night snackers loved them so much, the chain hints they’ll come back soon enough. In the meantime, there’s a slew of tacos made with Doritos shells, such as the 190-calorie Cool Ranch Doritos Loco Taco Supreme, or its 500-calorie Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch cousin.
These Easter treats sandwich classic marshmallow candy Peeps filling between two vanilla cookies, which sounds well and good – apart from the 140 calories per two cookies you’re noshing before even dunking them in milk. Problem is, the candy-colored dye is making a splash by turning snackers’ tongues – and poop – pink!

Twinkies ice cream
Nestle got the scoop on Hostess treat flavors for a batch of ice creams yanked straight from your childhood fantasies. The Twinkies pint packs bite-sized pieces of the golden sponge cake swirled with frosting in butter ice cream, at 160 calories for half a cup. There’s also classic Hostess Cupcakes flavor (180 calories for half a cup), with chocolate ice cream spun with frosting and cupcake pieces. Because you can have your cake and ice cream, and eat it too.
