Why Americans are clamoring for this raw fish dish.
With just a few pokes of your finger, the hottest dish of the year can be delivered right to your door.
The poke bowl is the trendiest dish to order this year, according to custom data food delivery site GrubHub ran for Moneyish. In fact, poke bowl orders spiked 198% in 2017 compared to the previous year, GrubHub, which delivers in more than 1100 cities, found. But they aren’t cheap, typically costing $13 and up, estimates John Cangir, the CEO of restaurant industry job site GrubJobs.com.
The 5 trendiest dishes on GrubHub for 2017
How much orders have spiked in 2017 compared to a year prior
Poke bowl, 198%
Turkey bacon ranch sandwiches, 156%
Chicken fingers, 131%
Tex mex burritos, 127%
Soft pretzels, 123%
For those of you who are out of the foodie loop, poke is a Hawaiian word meaning to slice, and a poke bowl is a bowl filled with slices raw fish, rice and a variety of other toppings. One of the most popular poke bowls is the Hawaiian-style poke bowl, which features ahi tuna, onions, rice and soy sauce.

Poke bowls are a new variation on sushi — sushi with toppings in a bowl, to be precise– which may explain their popularity. Plus, they appeal to a more modern consumer who is both nutrition-conscious and busy. Cangir of GrubJobs.com notes that poke bowls are “ very healthy as you can choose your fish, grains, sauces, vegetables” and “convenient.” And poke bowls are getting so hot among certain foodie groups that there are now entire restaurants devoted to poke, like Pokeworks in midtown Manhattan and Poke Mon in Portland.
Though the poke bowl stands out as the dish of 2017, GrubHub is also seeing Americans fall back in love with some comfort-food classics, including the turkey bacon ranch sandwich, chicken fingers, tex mex burritos, and soft pretzels (hmm, do we smell some cold weather blues, America?) — all of which round out the top five trendiest items to order in 2017. Just don’t expect that trend to keep pace into the summer season …
