From groceries to washing machines, here’s how celebrities like Kelly Rowland and Nicole Kidman spent their first big paychecks
Hey big spenders, take note of how these A-listers cashed in their coins.
Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland became a millionaire at 20 — but rather than blow it all on a huge house or a fancy car, her first major purchase included groceries. “When I got one of my first paychecks, I went to the grocery store and bought almost everything that my mom used to tell me was too expensive,” Rowland recently shared with InStyle. “I bought all of that s - - t, had a party at my house, and everybody ate up everything. I’ll never forget it, because it was fun and it was something I was able to fund myself.”
But once she got a taste for her newfound fortune, she admits she couldn’t say “No, No, No” to spending. “I remember just going completely nuts on trips to Paris and Italy . . . blowing like 30 grand in 30 minutes at Bergdorf Goodman. It was ridiculous,” she added. “Eventually, I started to realize that my AmEx bill was really, really high and I needed to chill out.”
But Rowland isn’t the only celeb who celebrated her initial success with an entertaining splurge. Here’s what eight more A-listers spent their first paychecks on after making major bucks.
The “Friday Night Lights” actress told InStyle that upon landing the role of Lyla Garrity, she bought her dad a flat screen TV for Christmas for an undisclosed amount. “He had no idea it was coming and then he called me and said, ‘Do you know anything about this?’ and I said, ‘Surprise!’” Kelly told the magazine that she’s experienced periods of debt since then after living off credit cards. “I finally got responsible when I got my own business manager who helped me pull in the reins,” she said.
The rapper, 38, said he purchased a $60,000 yellow Corvette in 2004 as soon as he started making big money. “I always had yellow cars from day one,” he said in a 2012 interview with Complex magazine. “I feel like if it’s yellow, and it’s a sports car, it’ll attract a lot of attention.”
The “Big Little Lies” actress told Time magazine in a video interview earlier this year that the first time she splurged was on a washing machine for her mom and dad. “Later on, I bought some boots for myself that were like the coolest boots I had ever seen in my life,” she said.
After driving a hand-me-down Honda that she got from Keenen Ivory Wayans when she first moved to Los Angeles, J. Lo told The Hollywood Reporter that the first thing she bought herself with her first major paycheck was a Mercedes. “It was a huge dea, though I was signing the lease to the car and breaking up with my boyfriend the same week. We were in the dealership and I was crying,” she told the publication.
The “Scandal” actress hid cash under her mattress while filming Save the Last Dance and put herself on a tight budget of what she allowed herself to spend. “At the end of it, I used all the cash from the three months and bought my first laptop,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
After his first paid acting gig, Pitt told Architectural Digest that he bought a period Craftsman chair and a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired lamp. “With my second paycheck, I bought a stereo,” the mega star told the magazine
“I ended up spending that paycheck on my own personal espresso machine,” Malek told GQ about his first big paycheck.
The “Black and Yellow” rapper told Complex that he bought a black and yellow 2011 Dodge Challenger for $40,000 that he continued to pay off over a few years. “It’s good to have bills. Keeps credit looking good,” he told the magazine.
