App developer Allen Wong, founder of Rego Apps, talks about life and success on Reddit
Generous people are happier people..
That’s something Allen Wong, the founder of Rego Apps, seems to get, telling readers in a Reddit AMA (“Ask Me Anything”):
“My upbringing [he grew up poor] probably made me more generous because I knew what it was like to struggle growing up. Even back then, it pained me to see someone struggle financially when I couldn’t help them out financially myself. Now that I can do something about it, I do what I can. Plus, I noticed that spending money on myself doesn’t make me as happy as I can make someone else happy with the same amount of money.”
He may not even realize how right he is. A 2008 study on the topic, published in the journal Science, concluded that those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while how much they spent on themselves had no impact on their happiness. “The amount of money, $5 or $20, didn’t matter at all. It was only how people spent it that made them happier,” said Michael Norton, a co-author of the study and the then-assistant professor of business administration in the marketing unit at the Harvard Business School.
Wong offered some other money advice that readers may want to follow. Despite being a self-proclaimed multi-millionaire, Wong still looks for deals, noting that Slickdeals and eBates are among his favorite sites. And he’s got inspiring advice for those who didn’t attend college, noting that in the case of the tech world, it is “more efficient to learn it [programming] on your own,” anyway.
